Name: Omer Turkomer
Position Running for: Executive Vice President
OT: “Hello everyone! My name is Omer Turkomer, and I’m a Turkish-American 2L from Sarasota, Florida. I currently serve as the Chair of the Finance Committee within the Student Bar Association and as a member of the Financial Services & Allocations Committee within the GW Student Government Association. Outside of law school, I enjoy watching neo-noir movies, experimenting with new recipes, and doing my best to keep my plants alive.”

Why should students choose you for Executive Vice President?
OT: “Experience: As senator in both the SBA and SGA, I’ve gained valuable insight into how both chambers operate. As EVP, I will integrate the most effective elements from each to create a stronger framework for SBA Senate operations.
Advocacy: Over the past year, I’ve successfully advocated for SBA budget increases and helped student organizations secure additional funding through the GW SGA. As EVP, I will continue amplifying student voices and fighting for their needs.
Accountability: As Finance Committee Chair, I’ve drafted and passed bills to enhance financial accountability and efficiency based student feedback. As EVP, I will extend these improvements across all aspects of the SBA Senate.”
What is the No. 1 issue students are facing and how will you address it?
OT: “Problem: The biggest issue facing students is the disconnect between them, the SBA, and the administration. Last year’s executive branch severely mismanaged the SBA budget, damaging trust among all three parties and leading to ongoing blame and frustration.
The Solution? Rebuilding Bridges. It’s time for a fresh start. While we can’t change the past, we can repair the relationships that were fractured. In my roles within the SBA and SGA, I’ve worked to restore confidence by balancing the SBA budget, directly assisting students and organizations in securing additional funding, and serving as a reliable source of information for student newspapers. However, there is still more work to do. As EVP, I will continue to build back the confidence the student body and administration had in the SBA by making its meetings more accessible and its decision making more transparent.”
How do you plan on bettering our standing with the administration and the school as a whole?
OT: “We often fear what we don’t understand, and I believe this is why administration struggles to trust the SBA. Instead of shutting them out or villainizing them, I want to implement a strategy I learned in the SGA—inviting administration to our meetings. This will give them firsthand insight into the changes we’ve made to address past shortcomings and help rebuild trust through transparency and collaboration.”
How will you better serve J.D. students?
No response.
How will you better serve evening students?
No response.
How will you better serve LL.M and S.J.D. students?
No response.
What do you plan to do regarding the Public Interest Journal?
OT: “I was proud to vote for the bill urging administration to fulfill its promise of creating the Public Interest Journal and adding it to the Journal Competition. However, the SBA must continue advocating by speaking with faculty members directly and acting as a unified voice for the will of the student body. As EVP, I will leverage my connections within the student body and administration to strengthen communication and advocate for meaningful progress.”
What should and should not change going into next year for the following roles SBA plays?
Advocacy.
OT: “The SBA must continue advocating for students but with a fresh approach and a more constructive tone. Rather than villainizing the administration or each other, we should prioritize transparency and ensure that all parties’ decision-making processes and perspectives are clear so that we can facilitate meaningful discussions and achieve real progress.”
Finances.
OT: “The SBA must re-examine its bylaws to streamline its operations, eliminate redundancy, and improve transparency and accountability. As Finance Chair, I’ve introduced and passed multiple bills addressing key financial inefficiencies, but there is still more work to be done to ensure responsible financial management.”
Programming.
OT: “The SBA executive branch must be more financially efficient when planning events, particularly in selecting venues. Smarter budgeting decisions would free up more funds to support student organizations and allow for a greater diversity of events on campus.”
Umbrella Organization for GW Law Student Organizations.
OT: “The SBA should resume advocacy efforts to allow law school student organizations to gain direct university recognition. Currently, the SBA’s role as an intermediary often slows down funding access, as only a few individuals can submit request through the necessary platforms.”
What is your opinion on the current SBA administration?
OT: “This year’s administration worked hard to rebuild the SBA after last year’s challenges. While I may not have agreed with every decision, I respect the dedication of my fellow students and won’t run a campaign that diminishes their efforts. Everyone running is highly qualified, and regardless of the election outcome, the SBA will be in capable hands. My focus is instead on continuing the progress we’ve made strengthening the SBA, and ensuring it serves students better than it did before.”
